A year ago, I was diagnosed with cancer. After an operation, I went through difficult treatment for the rest of the year. Being over diligent, I went to work nearly the entire time. First the coronavirus seemed distant, but I thought that if China was undertaking serious measures to stop the disease, this must be something serious. My immune system is compromised. What would happen to me if I got the virus?
Changes at work were implemented with just a few days warning. My workdays preparing remote materials might be up to 18 hours long even before the start of remote lessons. When we transferred to remote work, my children also transferred to distance learning from home. My husband was laid off, so he was able to take care of the children’s school.
On Mother’s Day, I came down with a high fever that turned out to be sepsis. I went to the hospital. Before I was discharged, an unkempt man, who was a total stranger, had spit on my child’s face. I was isolated alone so I would not be exposed to a possible infection. Fortunately, my child did not get infected.
My fixed-term employment contract was not renewed after three years. I was offered part-time work as a teacher.
I took a time out and began to recover. In the spring, I had applied for further training to open new vocational doors. I got a study place with excellent points and a place to practice just where I wanted the most! The summer’s rest, doing nice things, and wonderful, beloved, caring and fun people helped me recover. Corona no longer seemed as threatening. My batteries are now charged. Life is wonderful!
